The genuine dangers of counterfeit medicines

Counterfeit medicines are increasingly present in Europe. If Internet remains the primary source, these fakes are also penetrating pharmacies on the streets. Concretely, what are the risks? They are high and genuine: some counterfeits contain toxic substances, others are without any active ingredient, or the wrong amount of it, possibly damaging to any medical treatment, if not endangering patients. And in most cases, it is impossible for the non-expert eye to distinguish fakes from originals. How can we counter counterfeits?

Video description: With statements from Charlie McCreevy, EU Internal Market Commissioner, Mick Deats, UK Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Jim Thomson, European  Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines, Thomas Thorp from Ely Lilly, Stuart Hurst from Pfizer and Jean-Marc Bobée, Sanofi Aventis and European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries Associations (EFPIA). Video available in English version and International version, 9'30 minutes.
