ICJ on Kosovo

Yesterday, the ICJ confirmed that 35 UN member states filed written statements in the case opened by Serbia which challenges the legality of the Kosovo's unilateral independence declaration made in February 2008. For Sabine Freizer, Programme director at the International Crisis Group (ICG), an opinion in favor of Kosovo would definitely engage more States in the international community to recognize it as an independent State although she foresees a nuanced opinion from the ICJ.

Video description: Interview of Sabine Freizer, ICG, on:

  • The risks for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to set a precedent, for instance for the Republika Srpska;
  • Whether a favorable opinion to Serbia would question Kosovo's declaration of independence and re-open debates on its status;
  • The impact of the ICJ's opinion on further recognitions in the international community;
  • The progress made by Kosovo since its declaration of independence, especially with regards to the minority issues.  + Supporting shots.
