The rules that govern nutrition labelling in the EU have been in force for over a decade. In general, nutrition labelling is included on a voluntary basis so it depends on the goodwill of the agri-and-food industry. Moreover, the type of labelling varies from one product to the next and from one country to the other. As a result, few European consumers take the time to look for this information and to read and analyse it before making their choice. Labels need to be easy-to-read at the time of purchase, to help European consumers to take better control of their eating habits and avoid excess of all kinds.
