Part 2 - Croatia (Vukovar), Bosnia (Brcko)

As they approach the town of Vukovar, the two protagonists discuss their views of how the war began in Croatia in 1991 and the peculiar ferocity of it in Vukovar.
For Croatia, Vukovar is one of the most traumatic symbols of Serbian aggression. The Battle of Vukovar (Croatian, Serbian: Bitka za Vukovar) was an 87-day siege of the Croatian city of Vukovar by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), supported by various Serbian paramilitary forces, between August-November 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence. It ended with the defeat of the local Croatian National Guard, the near-total destruction of Vukovar and the murder or expulsion of most of the Croat population of the city and surroundings.

The Yugo is back on the motorway but soon taking the exit for Brcko, an autonomous town within Bosnia. It was levelled during the battle of the “corridor” during the war and it became one of the most prosperous places in Bosnia afterwards.
Marko and Miljenko arrive in a secondary school of Brcko, Bosnia, to attend a History class. Unlike anywhere else in the country, there are no such thing as Bosniak, Serbian or Croatian schools here.
Up until 2001, the children went to the same school but at different times of the day.

The Bosniaks would attend in the morning shift and then the national symbols would be changed for the afternoon classes for Serbs.
Today, despite the merging of education, they are taught “national” subjects – language and history – separately.
